Summary

World Driver Championship is a fast-paced racing game that guarantees immersion in the Grand Prix experience. The aim of the game is to press forward through the driving ranks. To do so, you must gain experience by entering events and then placing high enough to earn championship points. More tracks become available as you collect more points. As the game progresses, and depending on your performance, you may be asked to join other teams, which could mean access to more powerful cars. There are an initial ten events for you to clock up lots of career points and impress the watching team bosses.

Whatever motor you end up with, World Driver Championship will test your driving skills to the limit. Behind the lush presentation lies a devilishly difficult game. If you're looking for a high-speed adrenalin-pumping racer, you're in the wrong game, although there is a quick race option too. WDC demands a lot of concentration. The handling is quite unforgiving and you will find yourself playing catch-up if you clip a kerb or come together with another car. The good news is that there is no lasting damage after a collision, a la Gran Turismo.

The most striking thing about World Driver Championship is how good-looking it is for an N64 game. Where most games on the platform look a little fuzzy, WDC is comparatively pin-sharp in normal resolution, and positively lush in hi-res, although the letterbox perspective is difficult to play in.

If you're an N64 owner looking for an enduring driving game, something with depth and a bit of a challenge, World Driver Championship could be just what you're looking for.
