Summary

Wow. If you thought that Platinum Games would have dialed back the crazy when making Bayonetta 2 a Wii U exclusive, think again. The charismatic witch has a new haircut, new set of guns and a new horde of demonic monsters to stylishly slam into the ground.

As players of the first Bayonetta game would expect, the sequel can only be described as ‘manic’. It returns with massively over-the-top, magic-charged melee action with a smattering of gunplay to boot. Expect waves of enemies to surround you, each with different attack patterns and stances, while colossal beasts give chase and rain multiple projectiles from on high. Basically, ALL the crazy. And yet, whilst playing, if you’re careful enough, you can just about get into a flow of attack, expertly dodging incoming blows to launch Witch Time (a mode that allows you to deal heavy counterattacks in slow motion) and activating gruelling QTE finishers.

Of course, the sequel brings new weapons and abilities. For instance, Bayonetta can trade magic points to unleash the new Umbran Climax ability to summon up demonic monsters and deliver powerful attacks.

As well as the 'normal' control scheme that will be familiar to players of the first game, Platinum has incorporated a touch-based option that makes use of the Wii U Gamepad. This is an easier, more intuitive choice that will provide an easier way in for those new to the series.

All in all, it’s clear that Platinum has made itself right at home on Nintendo hardware.
