Summary

There's no overt connection between the stories of Outlast and its sequel, collected in Outlast Trinity along with the Whistleblower DLC, but a deep, dark air of creepiness pervades them both. The games are survival horror of the early period Resident Evil/Silent Hill type, where resources are extremely limited and every encounter will have you fighting for your life. It's not about jump scares and overwhelmingly powerful enemies so much as it is about atmosphere and the evil that lurks in the heart of men.

The first game, originally released in 2013, takes place in the mountains of Colorado where, buried in the remote Mount Massive Asylum, horrors lurk. An abandoned mental institution, the asylum has recently been re-opened by the 'research and charity' branch of the multinational Murkoff Corporation and has been operating in secret. Journalist Miles Upshur, acting on an anonymous tip-off, breaks into the place and discovers something that straddles the most terrifying fringes of nature, science and religion.

Outlast 2, released alongside this collection, sees cameraman Blake Langermann and his wife investigating the murder of a mysterious pregnant woman in Arizona. When their plane crashes, however, the pair are separated and Blake finds himself alternately trying to get to the bottom of a dark mystery tied to the church and fighting for his very soul...
