Summary

Taking characters from all the mainline Final Fantasy games and putting them into one massive, over the top beat 'em up is frankly a bit of a no-brainer. The Dissidia series started life on the PSP, but DISSIDIA: FINAL FANTASY NT is based on the arcade version that's been such a hit in Japan.

While the premise sounds like it's come straight from Smash Bros., DISSIDIA: FINAL FANTASY NT is nothing like Nintendo's crossover fighter. Nor does it have a huge amount in common with the likes of Street Fighter or Tekken. Rather, this is a three on three arena combat game with a huge amount of depth and strategy.

Despite straying from Final Fantasy's RPG roots, with a lot of information thrown at you and a lot of different systems in play it's FF through and through. If you take the time to learn how it all works, however, you'll find that what you've got is a fast, fluid fighter that focuses on positioning and timing rather than complex button sequences. The arena setting means that there's a lot of emphasis on being quick and less on memorising combos. There are two types of attack - those that do straight-up physical damage and bravery attacks that deplete your opponent's attack power and add to your own. It might seem confusing at first, but it actually creates a subtle interplay between the two types as you decide whether you want to hurt your foe right now or set yourself up for a future move.

But putting all that aside, let's not forget the thrill for fans of being able to set the likes of the Warrior of Light against Cloud Strife against Lightning. It's a battle of the ages!
