Summary
While Shantae: Half-Genie Hero's cover art suggests at first-glance that you're in for a JRPG fresh out of localisation, the reality is a fun, bopping action platformer with smart level design and oodles of charm.
The defender of Scuttle Town, Shantae has spent her days seeing off steam-powered pirates, doing battle with the dark undead and going toe-to-toe with a military takeover. A hero's work is never done, however, and when the Queen of the Seven Seas, Risky Boots, plots to steal an unlimited power source it's up to Shantae to step (or jump) up.
Shantae's helped out by a raft of different abilities that are yours for the unlocking. Transforming to a monkey, for example, will allow you to cling to surfaces while Shantae's mermaid form gives you full mobility underwater. Once you've unlocked them you're free to use them wherever you fancy, so Half-Genie hero becomes a lot like playing Super Mario 3 with all the suits unlocked.
It's all presented with a bright, catchy soundtrack and lush hand-drawn HD visuals. With The Pirate Queen's Quest, and the Friends Mode and Costumes Mode DLC thrown in for good measure, there's plenty of fun to be had in the magic world of Sequin Land.
