Summary

With Shadow of the Tomb Raider Eidos Montreal ends what was begun with Crystal Dynamics' reboot back in 2013, an exploration of the events that made the young Lara Croft the swaggering hero we know and love.

It's a darker game than the previous two, lingering on the morality of breaking into the worlds of the dead and having away with their artefacts. It begins with Lara taking a Mayan ritual dagger in order to keep it out of the hands of the sinister Trinity corporation. She fails to anticipate the consequences of her actions, however, and what ensues is a potential honest-to-god apocalypse. It's a game that dwells on obsession and family legacy, and the dark tone seeps into the environment and puzzles at time, giving it the feel of a tense horror game while keeping the big action squarely in focus.

With this outing there's a greater focus on puzzles, and the epic tombs rarely use the same mechanisms twice. There's also a selection of optional challenge tombs, deepening the game for anyone thirst for more (and there's a pretty good chance that you will be!)

The hidden city of Paititi offers something a little different, too, with plenty of side missions on behalf of the locals in a mountain metropolis that feels both lived in and ancient.

Lara casts a long shadow. Can you help her escape it?
