The name is a combination of the smallest unit of computer information and the ultimate emotion those bits are trying to create. When you look at Smilebit's repertoire, with games like Jet Grind Radio and The Typing of the Dead, you have no choice but to smile.
Smilebit was formed on April 20, 2000 and is based in Tokyo, Japan. The smiles are created by a team of 100 people overseen by president Shun Arai. The company prides itself on technological know-how, and utilizes its R&D mastery on platforms ranging from home consoles to mobile technology.

Smilebit's first work that SPOnG is aware of is the 1999 title, "Let's Make Professional Baseball Team" (Dreamcast).
