The evils of WoW capitalism

Q: So when do you get any time to 'play'?

IBB: Well, I would love to have more time to play. But luckily enough for me I'm a Starcraft player, so once a day, I give a call to our MD in Korea and I say let's go online, and we go online, and he kicks my ass and we're all good!

Q: Another issue that crops up in the mainstream press whenever they run Warcraft stories is that of Chinese Gold Farming. Why is it such a big issue? What's your stock response to press queries?

IBB: Well, we're against it, of course. We are doing everything we possibly can in order to prevent it from happening. We banned over 100,000 people just last month for violating our terms of use. We want to create a fair gaming environment and, from a company perspective, we're totally against it and we are doing everything we can to prevent it.

Q: You mentioned a 'fair gaming environment' - Jon, can you talk a little more about that?

JC: Well, anytime someone can get an advantage through a means outside of the game… basically we want everyone who is playing the game to be equal, based on their skill and their time they invest in the game rather than their financial status - so they can't just pay others to have their character levelled-up or whatever. We want everybody to make their own meaningful contribution.

Q: Finally, do you think that your eight million-plus paying subscribers will all want to upgrade to World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade?

IBB: I can answer that as a gamer, who plays World of Warcraft. I want to try new features and cool new things that come along, so I think that people that play the game are really going to want to see the new things that Jon's team added to the game.

SPOnG: Thanks guys

A trial version of World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade is available to download now from Blizzard's website and elsewhere.
