Summary

Usually, the primary attribute to a game that makes it popular and successful is its accessibility to a wide audience. While this is a general rule of thumb, there are exceptions in the market that are aimed specifically at hardcore game fans of a certain genre. Flight simulators - a genre typically developed on PC platforms - provoke something of a love/hate status among gamers. For those of you that remain firmly on the side of flight simulators, Falcon 4.0 is a real gem.

As many hardcore fans of the genre would expect, Falcon 4.0 is indeed complicated. Packaged with a one-inch thick manual (all in English too) the game will at first appear daunting. Thankfully, developers Microprose have considered the learning curve of Falcon 4.0 very carefully, and as a result have incorporated a whopping 28 training missions that will take you from the basics of the game through to the intricacies of flight handling. Once you feel comfortable with the game’s fifty or so controls, you can choose either to become further involved by tackling one of the campaign modes or have some fun with the instant action section that doesn’t require you to abide by the rules. Some form of analogue controller is recommended since keyboard controls can be trickier and less accurate.

Falcon 4.0 is a truly accomplished flight simulator that will rival anything to come out of Microsoft’s R&D studios. It is a little time consuming, but fans of the Falcon series will relish the challenge with anticipation.
