Summary

It’s almost guaranteed that one year after another will witness the arrival of a new version of Midway’s classic Mortal Kombat game. Whereas previous incarnations have featured just enough new additional characters and moves to warrant an upgrade, each version seems only to repeat the faults of the original game and maybe even manages to add a few, depending on how fussy you are. Fortunately, there are exceptions, and Mortal Kombat Trilogy is one of them.

An anthology of all the characters and fighting environments from the previous games, Mortal Kombat Trilogy is three (well, duh!) times the size and charm of the original, which makes for a big gaming experience. 32 characters are available from the start, with at least half a dozen hidden fighters in there, just to make sure you keep coming back.

Those of you familiar with previous versions of MK will be delighted to find that the gameplay remains pretty much unchanged, with the combos and special moves intact. A neat addition is the Aggressor Gauge, which builds and builds as you launch your attacks. When the gauge is full, your special moves become more powerful which of course means you can cause more damage to your opponent. There’s also a new finishing move called Brutalities, which leaves nothing to the imagination.

MK Trilogy should keep manic fans of the series happy. There is, after all, plenty to do here. The fact that there are a huge number of beat ‘em ups available, especially for the PlayStation, may mean that this game is overlooked. With the price now less than a tenner, that would be a shame.
