Summary

Most games that are remembered for their sheer playability in today’s hostile industry came from the early days of video games; a time when technological limitations left little for the developers to excel at, other than gameplay. Perhaps this is proved in Tetris more so than any other game of its time. When released on Nintendo’s newly branded Game Boy in 1989, Tetris was soon established as one of the most playable games ever created.

Simple gameplay is the key to the Russian orientated classic. The essential idea of Tetris is to keep a wall of falling blocks to a minimum by fitting blocks together that make complete horizontal lines, that in turn disappear. There are a limited variety of shapes, but the combination of the five available blocks leads to a great number of possibilities. As you make more and more lines, the game level will increase, causing the random blocks to fall faster. What’s more, no matter what your skill level is with Tetris, gameplay will be eventually terminated when the speed and complexity of the falling blocks outperforms the capability of the player. Best of all, Tetris is played for points, which is what gives players the drive to play on.

Tetris is a classic, no argument, and a game that has quickly become a household name. If you haven’t played it, play it. An essential purchase.
