Summary

Let’s be honest, most racing games are about racing, chasing or being chased. So it makes a refreshing change when the genre explores its adventure side. It’s nice when you can have a break from driving to talk to a few of your bosses and find out what your next challenge should be. THQ’s Emergency Patrol from Matchbox incorporates such gameplay elements for GameBoy Color.

Adopting a theme akin to something out of The X Files, your ultimate goal is to expose a mysterious army base and uncover the secret of a supposedly crashed UFO. Whether you take on the role of a police officer or firefighter the challenge awaiting you is a formidable one.

Although technologically limited, Emergency Patrol looks quite nice, but it only looks as good as can be expected from a GBC title. Graphically, you can’t really ask for anything more. It offers a variety of perspectives and interesting visuals that will keep its target audience entertained.

There are a total of 24 missions to participate in, each offering a challenge of its own. Each of the two vehicles, the fire engine and the patrol car, have their own unique handling, speed advantages and power ups, effectively making the driving experience of the game a varied one, depending on your preferred choice of transport.

There’s actually quite a lot to do here, and provided you have an adequate battery supply, the longevity of this game should keep you going for a while.
