Summary

After being in development for three years, Daikatana has lots of expectations to live up to, in light of the mighty Quake series in which Daikatana main-man John Romero was involved. The N64 version is developed by Ion Storm.

You take on the role of Superfly Johnson in your quest to bring down the evil Kage Mishima, who is in possession of the legendary sword, Daikatana. At least you know where the title emerged from, heh?

Graphics are comparable with other titles on the Nintendo 64, but with the use of Nintendo’s 4Mb RAM Expansion Pak, the visuals are noticably improved, enhancing the 3-Dimensional environments in which you must roam.

As a first person shoot-em-up, you’d be forgiven for thinking Daikatana is as simple as the original Doom. Now, to a small degree, this is the case, as you are expected to run around hitting switches and solving puzzles. However, Ion Storm have attempted, and quite successfully, to incorporate the use of a number of RPG elements to vary the gameplay a little. There are more power-ups than ever seen before in a game of this genre, there are a large number of weapons, defences, and status changes to keep your brain in gear. There’s even a mention of HP (Hit Points for those of you not familiar with RPG terms).

Daikatana’s strongest asset is its multiplayer mode. Utilising the Nintendo 64’s four controller ports to full advantage, split-screen foursomes will keep you going for a long time. There are two options for multiplayer, one being your basic shoot-em-up, the other employing a more strategical approach, whereby you must collect a number of gems before your rivals get to them.

Good as a single player, but get hold of some friends and a few extra pads, and Daikatana will keep you going as long as your fingers can hold out.
