Summary

As of the year 2000, the videogame industry has been going strong for around thirty years, but as a consequence, innovation and originality have sometimes suffered. Occasionally, software houses manage to salvage what originality is left in jaded industry minds and put it into development. Take 2 has done exactly that with the release of peculiarly named Moho.

Set in the distant future, the people of Earth now get their weekly entertainment buzz from watching a group of criminals battle in a contest for freedom. You begin the game by choosing to participate as one of the prison’s well-known contestants, either male or female. The tournament itself consists of a variety of matches that take place across several prison arenas. There are 80 playable levels in all that become increasingly challenging with progress. The learning curve of Moho is quite reasonable, but only once you have enough experience with the game control mechanism. After beginning a match you will find yourself attached to a boulder, and moving around with this handicap alters the gameplay considerably.

Although dependent on the graphics capabilities of the individual PC, Moho is one of the best looking developments to date. Textures are of a high resolution and can be manipulated extremely well. The best example of this is the destruction of a prison mate that sends a wonderfully mastered wave throughout the arena. It’s lush.

While Moho maybe doesn’t have the attraction of some of the industry’s masterpieces, it is fun to play and has a subtle addictive quality that can often provoke feelings of frustration. It’s nice to see a game that boasts a bit of originality from time to time, and Moho fits the bill nicely.
