Summary

Up until the next generation era of PlayStation, Nintendo 64 and Sega Saturn, games within the puzzle genre remained on a 2-dimensional plain. 3D capabilities can offer the genre two directions of development. A puzzle game can now be developed to incorporate the use of 3D into the game structure, or it can remain faithful to its vertical and horizontal plains and receive some graphical enhancements. Rat Attack falls into the latter category.

The conception of Rat Attack is one that could have been produced on any 8-bit platform of the eighties. With 3D platforms on the high street shelve, this Nintendo 64 creation of Rat Attack was probably the best option. Visual impressions are not astonishing, but a sense of realism and a 3D world is present. Once you have chosen your favourite Scratch Cat, you can go into the game proper. Similar to a game of mousetrap, your task is to catch as many fugitive mice as possible and dispose of them quickly. As you progress through the levels, the game becomes gradually harder across 50 levels of single-player mayhem.

With a 4-player simultaneous option across twenty multi-player levels, four controllers and a house full of cats will give Rat Attack a run for its money.
