Summary

Eidos and Core’s unbreakable partnership has won them many fans in past years. The Tomb Raider series, Fighting Force 1 and 2, and the PS2’s Project Eden. Next up in Core’s next-generation of games is Herdy Gerdy, again for PlayStation 2.

During the course of its development, Herdy Gerdy has consistently been under the media spotlight, and is likely to be one of the most scrutinised next generation console games available in 2002.

From an aesthetic point of view, Herdy Gerdy is very original. The game has been designed to give its players and observers a hand-drawn feel, and the technique has been executed brilliantly. Realism was never a design factor in Herdy Gerdy, so those looking for GT3-esque visuals should go elsewhere. Those with open minds and a feel for excellent gameplay should read on.

On paper, Herdy Gerdy is nothing more than a puzzle-solving platform game in terms of genre definition. But in practice, it’s so much more. Lots of the game design is completely original and often ingenious. Deciphering certain problems within the game world can be very rewarding at times and rarely are the tasks frustrating.

Core has implemented an excellent control system that is not too complex, and helps the player to tackle Herdy Gerdy’s rock-steady learning curve.

Herdy Gerdy’s storyline may be less than inspired, but that will not spoil things for you. Ultimately, the gameplay is what will keep players coming back for more and more.... and more.
