Summary
Late summer, year 2000, and the number of upcoming officially licensed F1 titles for the PSX that the industry knew of stood at four. Come the first chill of winter, and Sony’s version of events was the last to make its appearance. There’s a lot riding on this game, so is it good enough to reel in some of the potential punters who have put off buying an F1 title thus far? Let us play.
One of the first things noticeable about Formula 1 2000 is its opening menu. Like your favourite curry house, there’s so much on it, regarding options and game modes, it matches its rivals. The burning question when navigating the menu is of course what does it look like in-game and how does it play. Well, it certainly is a good looker. The cars and their livery are all present and correct, the tracks are accurately modelled and the scenic surroundings of the respective venues will be recognisable to anyone who has tuned in to the television coverage. Game-play and getting to grips with the cars racing in differing weather conditions is a case of being pushed in at the deep end and being ordered to swim. The learning curve is so steep, some of you may require grappling hooks, but once you master the handling and familiarise yourself with the circuits, it’s hugely rewarding. Just be prepared for a few false starts to your career as a Formula 1 driver. If you’re in any doubt as to how you’re performing, the sound of Murray Walker screaming from the speakers, tempered intermittently by the sobering tones of Martin Brundle, will leave you in no doubt. Go into this game firing on all pots, so to speak, and you will most likely end up spending more time in the kitty litter than on the tarmac. The key to success is to ease yourself into the game.
