Summary

Videogames tend to concentrate on cool subjects. OK, there are fishing games but that aside, the rest is pretty cool. SWAT 3: Close Quarters Battle, places you in charge of an elite unit of LAPD Special Weapons and Tactics officers. You have to take out the bad guys and secure the safety of the innocent.

You know you are in trouble if a SWAT team turns up on your doorstep. SWAT are the boys the police call up when all else fails and they are swift, effective and ruthless.

You will face twenty-one missions in SWAT 3. Your tasks will involve rescuing hostages, arresting high-risk suspects, and securing the safety of a variety of foreign diplomats.

This is a great game. First person shooters are amongst the cream of games anyway, but this is a leap forward in terms of excitement. Stacking up with your men outside a doorway, picking the lock and issuing the command, “Breach bang and clear!” is exhilarating. On this command your legion of nutters kick down the door, throw in a flash-bang grenade and leg-it in screaming for compliance.

SWAT 3 is set in Los Angeles in the year 2005. There is a sub-plot in career mode in as much as there is a conference for peace, culminating in the signing of the United Nations Nuclear Abolishment Treaty. As you can imagine there are all kinds of lunatics trying to interrupt the proceedings and it is up to you to stop them. This elite edition includes LAN and online multiplayer options allowing for co-operative and adversarial play.
