With the blockbuster release of the X-Men on the big screen, it comes as no surprise that a number of tie-in video games were to be released around the same time. The latest in a short line of related titles is Mutant Wars on Game Boy Color.
Players interested in Mutant Wars should be aware of the similarities to some old classics of the 80's, such as Streets of Rage. The style of game-play will become apparent when you select one of the games many playable X-Men. Popular characters, Wolverine, Storm, Cyclops and Gambit are available from the off. Once you have chosen either of the games story and fight modes, you will uncover what is essentially a 2D scrolling beat-em-up. As you progress through the levels you must defeat what seems to be an infinite number of Cyborgs that approach you from both directions.Staying true to any game of this style, you will find yourself fighting a boss at the end of each level. While the main parts of the level are relatively simple and easy to manoeuvre around, the bosses you come across are very aggressive, leaving little margin for error, which can often lead to excessive frustration. Characters are easy to control, but have distinctly limited combat skills, although each character does have their own unique special attack.
Technically speaking, there is nothing new here, but players should not be disappointed as Mutant Wars story unfolds in the simple 2D graphics of a ten-year-old machine. Mutant Wars is extremely challenging to play. You have been warned. The rage is out there.
