In the world of First Person Shooters, a game has to be pretty special to stand out from the crowd. The mighty Quake series is the king of the castle, but not far behind is Unreal from Infogrames. Unreal Tournament won the Multiplayer Game of the Year Awards and its easy to see why.
Totally Unreal is a compilation of the original Unreal, Unreal Tournament and a set of mission Packs, and comes in a DVD case containing four discs.
Unreal is an adventure first person shooter in the vein of Doom and Quake. You ship has landed on the far away planet of Na Pali and you find yourself alone in a strange world. As you make your way out of the stricken ship and through the levels, strange angry creatures attack you that are as varied as they are ugly. And so it goes on until you escape or die. The mission pack is series of specific tasks, which see you re-enter Na Pali on either salvage assessment assignments or seek and destroy missions. If you couldnt get enough of Unreal, this missions pack will keep you happy for hours.
Unreal Tournament is the real Gem of the pack. This is a death-match dedicated tournament featuring fifty maps and a multitude of game styles. There is the standard, every man for himself death match, capture the flag, domination, a zone protection game and many more. In single player every game mode has ten games of escalating difficulty to complete.
The weapons have everything you would expect in a modern first person shooter but with one big difference. Each weapon has two functions. By pressing the right mouse button, the rocket launcher will deposit rockets on the floor as mines, the flack cannon will emit a spherical charge of flack, which uses more ammo, but causes increased damage. The game is less frantic than Quake 3 and suits a more strategic player. Positions can be taken up on high points, allowing you to use the sniper rifle to your hearts content.
This is a great pack featuring everything that is of merit in the genre.
