Summary

Videogames based upon best-selling novels are rare, and seldom do any of these games become hugely successful. But there are exceptions, one of which is of Dragonriders on PC. Based upon Anne McCaffrey’s best selling series, the first computer incarnation of the chronicles covers the entire sixteen book series.

As a young Dragon Rider, you embark upon a mission with other Riders to seek a new leader after the death of your last one. But in natural role-playing style, the game plot takes a turn for the worse, as a deadly disease spreads across the land. It is at this point that you discover you are the only person standing preventing the destruction of Pern.

This evil man’s fairy tale sets the tone of Dragonriders brilliantly. The newly developed game engine captures the rich environments of Pern beautifully. The game is graphically stunning, and boasts fully animated characters, complete with skin tones and lip-sync dialogue. Your journey will see you travelling across hundreds of locations where you will meet and interact with as many as 250 characters.

Interestingly, Dragonriders’ strength is not based upon its combat elements of play. Most battles are puzzle-orientated and lacking in gore, but the situations are still life-threatening, to say the least.

Dragonriders has been designed with a broad audience in mind. It lacks a harsh certificate and doesn’t feature complex status screens and gameplay, helping it appeal to the largest possible audience.
