Summary

Motorcycle racing, an age-old genre, has been given a big push on 3D home consoles after a quiet period in the early nineties. Software houses like EA have been responsible for this sudden burst, and now Take 2 is up for a piece of the action with the release of Motocross Mania for PlayStation.

As one of the few games to combine three styles of racing into one game – Motocross, Supercross and Freestyle – Motocross Mania is one of the most comprehensive games of its kind available. After selecting a driving style you will be given the opportunity to participate in either single events or competitive tournaments. When racing, either against other players or your own lap time, handling will feel a little awkward to begin with, but it is quite accurate. For example, when catching some “big air”, players must align themselves with the race line in advance since all directional movement in mid-air is lost. It’s a nice touch that offers challenging and realistic gameplay. As you begin to win races, further tracks will be unlocked, faster bikes will be accessible, and new aerial tricks will become available. Further more, winning championships earns you cash, which in turn allows the player to enter the garage and tune his/her bike. Freestyle option is perhaps the most enjoyable aspect of the game, whereby players can catch big air from steep ramps and perform some awesome stunts to acquire as many points as possible.

Motocross Mania is clearly a well-constructed game with a good progression system and some fearsome AI routines, not to mention great gameplay.
