Summary

Eidos and Core, most famously known for their outings with Lara Croft and Tomb Raider, have spread their wings (ha!) and dipped their collective toes in the flight genre. The 'spread their wings' pun falls flat on its harris, however: Thunderhawk 2: Operation Phoenix is all about a big, bad-ass helicopter.

So what’s the game about? In a nutshell, you begin your game in a world ridden with war, crime and terrorists, and ultimately, your goal is to make Earth a safer place to live once again. A bit like real life, really. If you can resolve all the problems in the world, you’ve completed Thunderhawk 2: Operation Phoenix.

Avoiding a minority market appeal, Core and Eidos have gone for a ‘pick up and play’ approach. This is no doubt a wise move, since most PlayStation 2 owning gamers are not looking for an intense simulator that requires huge flight manuals and lots of patience. Nice move.

Visually the game is very, very pleasing. The full 3D maps have been rendered beautifully, and help authenticate the game’s setting. The environments are also some of the largest the PlayStation 2 has been host to. Some playing areas reach sizes of 256 square kilometres! The addition of weather effects (rain, snow and sandstorms), and visual and gradual damage is just the icing on the cake.

The combat is intense, it's highly playable, and even more addictive than the last Thunderhawk instalment. Do you need any more convincing?
