The popular Stateside sport of Skateboarding has become increasingly popular in the UK over the past 20 years or so. So much so in fact, that a number of video games based upon the sport have been produced across a variety of platforms, not least, Freestyle Scooter for GameBoy Color. Courtesy of Crave, Ubi Soft and supreme GameBoy developers Crawfish, Freestyle Scooter is one of the best portable Skateboarding games available for the age-old console.
Similar the retro classic 720, Freestyle Scooter takes on an isometric point of view, allowing for enhanced visuals and a higher level of detail. The game takes place across several well-known skateboarding environments that include standard street courses, basketball courts and school playgrounds. Each environment is heavily populated with obstacles that allow the player to perform higher jumps and bigger, better stunts. With just two buttons and a directional pad, the player is able to execute manoeuvres such as tail-whips, varials and back-flips, provided the button combination is correct. Grinds can be performed by riding ledges, rails and benches, among other things. But on your travels, you must be aware of several hazards that will slow you down and make your challenge harder. Trucks and cars often make an appearance at the worst possible time, so quick reflexes are required.
Freestyle Scooter is a thoroughly enjoyable game thats on the same level as Tony Hawks Pro Skater and Mat Hoffman BMX. Superb.
