Summary

Samurai Showdown: Warrior’s Rage brings SNK’s classic fighting series onto the PlayStation with style. Widely regarded as one of the better beat-em-ups, any fighting game with Samurai warriors has to have a certain ancient Japanese feel to it. Warrior’s Rage looks classy, has good audio and an addictive challenge. What more would you like from a beat-em-up?

In this version, the action is displayed using polygons instead of sprites. This break from traditional graphics allows for new special effects and camera angles. SNK decided not to go for the typical 3D free-roaming camera approach, they opted for a locked 2D perspective. This means that the gameplay is essentially the same as before, but certain special moves make the camera spin around the characters, which looks very impressive with super moves.

Opting for more controlled, deliberate aggression, Samurai Showdown is the thinking man’s fighting game. It moves away from the combo style of other fighting games and replaces it with precision and well-timed blows. As a result, it is more realistic, you can lose your weapon and blood is plentiful if you get caught with a fierce slash.

The story is set 20 years into the future, from Samurai Showdown’s perspective, and only a few original warriors return to the fray. Being 20 years older means Hanzo and Haomaru are a little worse for wear, but they can still pull out a few nasty tricks. If your meter is charged you can perform moves that will knock your enemies weapon out of their hands.

Samurai Showdown: Warrior’s Rage is a refreshingly different fighting game, highly recommended for fans of the series.
