Summary

Rollercoaster enthusiasts will always argue that there is nothing better than riding a real-life rollercoaster, but as technology progresses, simulators of such extreme machines are becoming more and more accurate. Even Disney has opted for a simulator over a new coaster for their latest attraction at Disney World. Fortunately, vertigo sufferers can now rest in peace with the knowledge that Coaster Works is now available for Dreamcast. No longer will the nauseous have to deal with the extremities of harsh G-forces and 300ft vertical drops.

Developed for Dreamcast, Coaster Works is probably the most advanced simulator of its kind to date. Unlike Hasbro’s Rollercoaster Tycoon, this game has been developed in full 3D, but as a crucial extra, the creators of the coasters can ride them in a first-person perspective. Visually, Coaster Works is reasonably impressive, but is lacking a smooth flow of the track that unfortunately makes your coaster look jagged.

Players can now build any coaster to their preferred specifications and incorporate some terrifying ride features. As well as steep drops and high speeds, vertical loops and corkscrew turns are readily available for construction. But you must bear in mind the laws of physics when designing the ultimate scream machine. If the drops on your coaster becomes progressively taller, for example, the carriage won’t make it around the track. Good planning and trial and error plays a major part within the gameplay of Coaster Works.

Could it be possible that the sick bag and the three-hour queues to experience two minutes of pleasure/terror are now gone? Of course not. But Coaster Works takes one step further towards achieving the ultimate in virtual reality.
