Summary

Activision’s Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater series is undoubtedly the most fun-to-play, popular and most technically accomplished skateboarding game to exist. So where’s the competition? To be truthful, there hasn’t been any other skateboarding game that’s even come close to Neversoft’s masterpiece - until now. Enter Konami’s ESPN X Games Skateboarding for PS2.

Although Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater still has the licence to included real skatedudes such as Hawk himself, Bam Margera and Rodney Mullen, there are eight other professionals that include Kerry Getz, Bob Burnquist and Colin McKay. Regardless of licensing and the politics of video game publishing, ESPN X Games Skateboarding is purely about skating and scoring, and that’s the important thing.

Players unfamiliar with the skateboarding scene can take full advantage of the game’s comprehensive tutorials. You will learn how to catch big air, not to mention how to perform dozens of tricks. Once you feel you’re ready, it’s time to get into the game proper.

Perhaps the most interesting aspect of ESPN X Games Skateboarding is the sheer variety of lush environments. As well as superbly designed professional skating arenas and some challenging street circuits, the developers have included several fantasy areas that comprise of a prehistoric museum, a cruise ship and ancient ruins.

The gameplay itself is actually quite tricky and does require some practice. But given time, you’ll be pulling off huge combos and getting plenty of big air.

With all the aforementioned features, a practice mode, a head-to-head mode, and a great soundtrack, ESPN X Games Skateboarding gives the Tony Hawk game more than a run for its money.
