Summary

Activision, the people who brought you the Tony Hawk Pro Skater series of games, are back. This time around, Tony’s been left at home, no doubt counting his stash of cash. His good friend Mat is here, however, and he’s going to show us what he can do on his bicycle. Mat Hoffman is one of the biggest stars on the BMX circuit, competing in major events all over the world, and this is his game, his retort to the master of the half-pipe, the boy Hawk. It runs on the same game engine and features similar environments to the Game Boy Advance version of Pro Skater 3. It has pretty much the same control method too. Tricks performed are registered and scored in the same way as Pro Skater 3, with the emphasis on completing combos as you ride various ramps and other would-be obstacles.

The gameplay is as fun and addictive as the skateboarding title with which it shares so many features. There are riders other than Hoffman from the pro circuit available to play as, all with individual skills and weaknesses. On the progression side of things, players can move up through the ranks, unlocking new courses, bikes and bike upgrades in the process.

If you missed the handheld delight that was Mat Hoffman on Game Boy Color, there’s really no excuse to let the GBA version pass you by. If you’ve already experienced palm-sized Matty H, then let the Advance enhance your enjoyment.
