Summary

While it’s arguably still more fun to play the villain, be it in a computer game or even in real life, there is still a large audience that think to themselves, “Golly, I wish someone would lock him up and throw away the key”. Well, gamers now have the chance to do just that with the release of Activision’s World’s Scariest Police Chases for PlayStation.

Not content with the villainous acts shown in the likes of Grand Theft Auto and Driver, The World’s Scariest Police Chases (WSPC) parodies these games and allows you to do all the chasing. Based on the hit American TV show, courtesy of Fox, the game comes complete with full commentary from none other than Sheriff John Bunnell himself. Structurally, the game consists of 20 or so missions that entail the player arresting drunks and catching drug traffickers among other things. But it’s not all fast-paced action; the game’s patrol mode has the player wandering around real-time 3D environments, waiting for something to happen. Criminal acts can occur at any time in real life, and this has been simulated well in WSPC.

A multi-player co-operative option is a nice touch. Here, you can work in tandem to overturn the criminals in this vast city, using police-grade armaments and a variety of vehicles, including oversized tanks and traditional police cars.

The World’s Scariest Police Chases proffers some interesting gameplay that offers a degree of originality. It may only be Driver in reverse, but the gameplay is noticeably different and that’s where its strength lies.
