Summary

Electronic Arts’ annual F1 offering makes a return to the Playstation 2, despite being a little late to catch the start of the season. Officially licensed by Formula One Administration Limited, F1 2002 features all the drivers, teams, cars and tracks from the 2002 FIA Formula One World Championship.

Including the two newest teams, Toyota and Renault, F1 2002 recreates comprehensively the whole Formula One experience, giving the player the chance to compete for the illustrious F1 crown.

The PS2 version plays host to a collection of unique features: EA Sports Cards involves competing for, unlocking and collecting F1 team-specific sports cards, in order to win unique rewards and access new game modes. An enhanced Challenge Mode sets the player multi-car challenges, which present competitions with the star races from the F1 grid. There are 11 of these challenges in all. A feature called Team Duel places the player in a head-to-head with an opponent in an equally competitive machine.

The visuals in F1 2002, as expected, have been the subject of an overhaul since the last instalment of the series. An overall sharper image is complemented by some great environment mapping, which emulates reflections on shiny surfaces. This is especially distinctive on the drivers’ helmet.

Camera work throughout the game features multiple director cameras, further enhancing the game’s TV production style. Expect a very polished and faithful Formula One simulator.
