Summary

As the future of online gaming draws nearer, and broadband penetration approaches mainstream status, FPS games have taken a clear lead over RPGs as the Web's preferred online genre. The aptly named Gore is one such online game.

It is the future, the middle of the 21st century, and massive overpopulation, resource shortages and food riots have plunged the global economy into chaos. Nearly half of Earth's 10 billion population has died of starvation. You are a survivor. Keep it that way.

Developed by 4D Rulers, Gore strips down the genre to its bare essentials and even leaves out some of the fundamental elements of the first-person game, such as lifts and switches. Levels are vast, yet simple, with ladders being the only method of scaling the game's landscapes. This development decision, while not an instantly appealing one, does have its advantages. The game's lack of complex gameplay makes the game very accessible to newcomers, as players essentially have to concentrate solely on weapons and stealth to survive. Reduced minimum specifications also mean owners of even older PC's can play Gore. It also runs surprisingly well through a 56K modem.

To boost the element of strategy, 4D Rulers has given players the opportunity to blow up any collectible or moving object - including weapons. Players can simply destroy weapons pickups to prevent the enemy from gaining a healthy arsenal, or wait until an enemy approaches the goods and blow them up along with the ammo. Cunning.

4D Rulers has taken a step back into FPS history and created a new, uncomplicated and, above all, fun gaming experience. Good job.
