Summary

Joining the plethora of add-ons and expansion packs for Microsoft's technical masterpiece, Flight Simulator 2002, is World Airports from the specialists at Just Flight and SimFlyers.

Those already in possession of Microsoft’s piece of software will most likely have gained a respectable amount of virtual flight experience and become somewhat accustomed to the art of piloting. So while there’s little else on the market that will help you improve your game/simulation skills, there are several comprehensive environment packages that can help make the world of Flight Simulator 2002 become just a little more diverse. World Airports is one such title.

It doesn’t take a genius to figure out what this expansion has to offer: accurate representations of some of the world’s largest and busiest airports and some 50 flight plans to go with them. But that’s just the skin and bones of the package. The World Airports expansion really begins to flesh out once you make use of the meticulously designed flight plans or once you decide to take a stroll down to the local airport. The attention to detail seen in the airports is admirable, featuring full-length runways, taxiways, buildings, inert objects, cars, buses and service vehicles, all of which come with detailed texturing, seasonal effects and light-sourcing.

Of course, the quality of onscreen visuals is dependent on the graphics card, RAM and processor you have under the hood of your PC, but the level of realism achieved even with a minimum spec configuration is worthwhile.

The flight plans accompanying World Airports are incredibly accurate, and come in the form of lengthy text files. You can even program them into the FMCs (Flight Management Computers) of third-party aircraft add-ons such as 747-400 and Airbus A320 Professional.

World Airports should be welcomed by professional pilot wannabes looking for that little more from Flight Simulator 2002.
