Summary

Parents beware: if the underground rumours are correct, the western world as we know it is on the verge of yet another playground craze. So take note, for the next time you drag the kids kicking and screaming, around Marks and Sparks for hours on end (oh how these frightful memories stay with us!) the best-behaviour bribe may well come in the form Japan's latest export, Medabots.

Set sometime in the near future, Medabots' plot revolves around a group of young kids who battle it out with their pet robots. Each Medabot consists of a frame called a Tinpet and four body parts (head, left arm, right arm and legs) that determine its function. In addition, each Medabot has a medal that controls its intelligence. Fuelled with artificial intelligence and a specialised arsenal of unique, interchangeable weapons, these robots compete in competitions known as 'Robattles', the winner not only earning a victory, but also collecting a part from the loser.

It's this collection of parts and upgrades that give the game its depth. Every different combination of Medabot parts will affect the robots' function, influencing its control, fighting style and effectiveness on different terrains. From a total of 550 unique Medabots, that works out somewhere in the region of 3,900,000 different combinations.

In much the same way as Pokemon Blue and Red, the two Medabots versions offer what is essentially the same game in each instance, but featuring different robots, items and weapons to win and trade. In the same vein again, players can play through the game alone, winning as many battles as possible, therefore increasing their Medabots' power and skills, or link up and battle with friends.

Are we to expect a surplus mountain of discarded Pokemon cartridges? We expect not, but be prepared for a new fad, however small.
