Summary
Tarzan made the trip to Game Boy in late 1999 in the old school form of a traditional scrolling platformer. Three years on, the ape-like Disney character is swinging right back onto Game Boy Advance for another adventure with his old friends Terk, Jane and Professor Porter.
Developed by Digital Eclipse, Return to the Jungle is similar to it's Game Boy Color original, albeit with superior visuals and additional game controls. In a Zelda-style touch, players get to control the king of the jungle as both an adult or as a child, showing players Tarzan's life story. This makes little difference to the gameplay, but at least there's a storyline to keep you interested.
Navigating both land and sea environments, which include dark caves and mines, you'll bump heads with numerous jungle enemies such as wild boars and formidable leopards. Watch out for T-Rex, he's a real nasty fellow. But most of the game's hazards can safely be avoided by swinging on the occasional vine. It's what he does best, remember?
There's not much else to Return to the Jungle, but it has everything it needs to be a great platformer. Game Boy Advance has once again proved that you don't need state-of-the-art visuals to produce something thoroughly playable. Long live 2D!
