Summary

Adventure racing games, as good as they are, are few and far between in the games industry, but it does make them memorable. Diddy Kong Racing was a fine example of a racing adventure game, and following suit is Midway's Freaky Flyers for PS2.

Unlike Diddy Kong Racing, which focused on several racing themes such as karting, flying and boat racing, Freaky Flyers, as the title suggests, puts all of its efforts into the flying aspect of racing, something we don’t see very often.

The game itself has the feel of a cartoon, boasting vibrant and crisp visuals and 14 zany characters. One of the most extensive racers we’ve seen for a while, Freaky Flyers tells a different story for every one of these playable characters, with their adventure spanning great locations such as Danger Island and the windy city of Chicago.

As an airborne racer, Freaky Flyers is a tricky game. The basics of manoeuvering your craft are simple, easy to pick up and fun to control. But to master racing skills and win some of the later races, you’ll have to learn the intricacies of flight control, and that only comes with practice. And what better way to hone your skills than in a multi-player frenzy with your friends. This is possibly the most fun aspect of the game, offering great longevity.

Freaky Flyers is a refreshing change from the norm. In the words of Midway, “it’s as if Chuck Jones animated ‘It’s a Mad Mad Mad Mad World’ with planes and made it a video game”.
