Summary

Small developers are often underrated with regards to video games, but with the release of Celtic Kings: Rage of War from little known Bulgarian producer Haemimoni, maybe they'll get the attention they deserve.

It's that medieval time again, dark forces are at work, and there's some role-playing to be done. So come on, RPG veterans, banish that evil. Oh, and feel free to engage in idle conversation while numerous elves fight a few hundred battles.

A bit of a "Gauntlet-em-up", if you will, Celtic Kings challenges players not only to solve puzzles, find clues and listen to stories, but to battle myriad trolls and demonic creatures on some of the largest playing areas seen in a video game. Some environments are a remarkable 32,000 pixels wide and can accommodate for some 5,000 animated creatures onscreen. In fact, single player mode alone should take you around 50 hours to complete.

Multi-player mode supports up to eight players and offers a variety of game modes and options such as a scenario editor, random map generator and an offline ranking system. If ever a game had longevity, it's Celtic Kings.

The keyboard and mouse configuration allows for an extensive control method that covers most aspects of gameplay with just the press of a button. As with most games of this breed, it takes a little time to learn, but it's worth the effort. Your speed and ability to navigate through the game quickly will prove invaluable, particularly in multi-player mode.

Celtic Kings is a strong combination of RTS and RPG elements of play, and deserves to be a top seller. It mightn't have the widest appeal a game can offer, but with hardcore strategy veterans, it's a guaranteed hit.
