Summary

Since the release of Microsoft Train Simulator in 2001, the newly developed train-em-up has exploded of late with a whole load of virtual build-your-own-railway games. There are already several expansion kits and train-based spin-offs, and here's another from Koch, appropriately titled Virtual Railroad.

With Virtual Railroad, players can drive trains powered by steam engines, motor coaches, diesel and electric locomotives on virtual tracks. Various passenger cars and freight cars are available for train assembly. A realistic impression is demonstrated by numerous large buildings, landscape parts, bridges, trees, equipment and accessories. Model railroaders can choose between driving trains on one of the pre-installed track systems or design a completely new installation. From picturesque branch lines to the high-speed track for the ICE or the switchyard of a Swiss mountain line, everything is possible. For all railroad themes, vehicles, buildings and pieces of equipment are available. All locomotives show realistic track behaviour concerning top speed, braking distance and acceleration, and switches and barriers provide realistic rail traffic. Virtual Railroad is not limited to driving on completed installations either. You can build and equip your own railway lines as you like, without having to worry about space.

Virtual Railroad is one of those games that unexpectedly grips its players and doesn't let go. As much we're reluctant to admit it, we like trains. A lot.
