Summary

Previously, submarine-based strategy games have had problems cracking the mainstream video game market. Games such as Silent Hunter, Sub Command and Submarine Titans were all respectable titles, but they were all for PC only. But now, thanks to Metro3D, the world's most popular console is to get its very own submarine action game in the form of Sub Rebellion for PlayStation 2.

When the Earth's plates begin to shift in the early 22nd century, much of the world's mainland submerges into the ocean. Millions perished, but those that survive are forced to live the life of an amphibian, using the latest in submarine technology. Inevitably, with watery disaster comes conflict, and playing as the better of two hi-tech factions, you must take to the depths of the sea in an experimental Clonus sub and fight for all that is good.

Yes, this is underwater combat at its best. In what is a surprisingly fast-paced experience, you'll immediately be thrown in the deep end, as it were, doing battle with oncoming torpedoes, depth charges and even a few surface-launched homing missiles. Manoeuvrability is important here, so your focus should be on positioning rather than on excessive firepower.

The levels themselves are gigantic and consequently come with numerous hidden coves and blind spots, not to mention buried valuables that can be found with your handy sonar. Some bonus items even allow you to upgrade your sub with new engines and shielding.

Demonstrating some excellent deepwater physics, lighting effects and animations, as well as original and innovative gameplay, Sub Rebellion is the PS2's best and only submarine title so far.
