Summary

Well it's another year, another age, at least in video game standards. With the release of Microsoft's Age of Mythology comes a special collector's edition for the hardcore community. Complete with limited edition figurine, posters, music CD, Mythology book, Tech Trees and a "Making of" DVD, you'll know everything you wanted to know about Age of Mythology, and then some.

In the most extensive instalment of the series to date, 2002's Age of Mythology gives its players a choice of nine Egyptian, Greek and Norse races to play God with. Much of the game remains similar to its predecessors, and there's are the usual run of conflicts, bloody battles, resources and buildings on offer. But there's also a heavy element of fantasy RPG lurking within Age of Mythology.

In a world filled with beasts such as Minotaurs and Cyclops, players can call upon these mythical fighting machines in some of the biggest battles hosted on the Age of Empires engine. And slipping into the shoes of the RPG, players can even call upon a few resident gods. A few strikes from Thor's Hammer wouldn't go amiss and a visit from Zeus is sure to bring a few battles to an abrupt end. It's all in a day's work for the die-hard RTS fan, but it's not overcomplicated and will encourage newcomers to the series.

There's also a bunch of magical spells, new weapons, buildings and several other obligatory improvements at your disposal, expanding the mythological world even further.

A new easy-to-use banner interface, some dynamic visuals, a well designed battle engine and a thoroughbred game engine are all vital tools that help make Age of Mythology the best in its league.
