Summary

2003, and many would say that Ultima Online is unarguably the biggest online RPG available on the Internet, bigger than Everquest or anything else to go before it. It may well be true, and extending the legendary Ultima Online epic even further is Origin's Age of Shadows expansion from Electronic Arts.

In a nutshell, Age of Shadows includes two new professions, enhanced player quests, a custom house design tool, a new magic item system, new attack moves, new magic, more land, graphical enhancements, new monsters and what will be known as Ultima Online's biggest ever dungeon. That's a lot of extras, so let start at the beginning.

Of the two new professions available, the Paladin, a holy warrior, serves as a healer in battle, sent to aid his fellow combatants by healing wounds and curing diseases and negative status effects. The Necromancer's role, as you might expect, is something more sinister. This magician is capable of assuming control of the dead and can summon pain, cast curses and turn the dead into the undead.

A new house design tool means players can customise their virtual home and choose from thousands of graphics to change different parts of their humble abode, including floors, walls, window and stairs.

New attack moves, new magic and a new magic system really speak for themselves so we wont divulge too much about these aspects. But what we will say that it helps make the game world more diverse and comes in handy for Age of Shadows' upgraded player quests.

There is also more land to settle on. The new region is called Malas and is the largest expansion of the Ultima game world yet, with space for some 40,000 houses and 40 points of interest.

But what hardcore players will find most enticing is the addition of Ultima Online's biggest ever dungeon - Doom. In here you'll find anything and everything, ranging from rare items to new enemies to new and formidable boss creatures.

You can't, in all honesty, ask for anything more of an expansion pack. It's a fine addition, end of story.
