Summary
In 1993, two little known actors - David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson - were brought together to film the first series of a paranormal TV series called The X-Files. And as you all know, it was huge, a phenomenon even. In fact the series and its 200 episodes carried on right into the new millennium where the mythology of the series was brought to a close and the truth finally revealed. And although the TV series may be finished, the conspiracy lives on in video games with Vivendi's Resist or Serve for PS2.
We can't deny that the first X-Files video game incarnation was something of a disappointment, but developer Black Ops has more than made up for things with Resist or Serve, offering a game that is far more authentic and playable than the PlayStation original.
New and improved, Resist or Serve focuses greatly on authenticity and boasts not just the likenesses of Mulder and Scully, but their voices too. In addition, the plot of the game is faithful to the TV series, the environments are much as you would expect, and there are even cameos from the likes of Assistant Director Skinner, the Cigarette Smoking Man and The Lone Gunmen. As you would expect, players are able to assume the role of either Mulder or Scully in a mentally challenging adventure that sees the unorthodox agents discovering the existence of sentient Black Oil, aliens and government conspiracies.
With regards to gameplay, Resist or Serve is clearly inspired by Capcom's Resident Evil series, or more accurately, Resident Evil 2. From the beginning, players must choose one of the two agents and progress through the adventure from that perspective. Mulder is more involved when it comes to combat, whereas Scully's character is more involved with collecting facts and scientific evidence. Yes, just like in the TV series. And once a player has completed one scenario, they are to repeat the game through the eyes of the other character. Yes, just like Resident Evil 2. A series of fixed camera angles and pre-rendered backdrops help to make the adventure more atmospheric, and there's even an authentic soundtrack to boot.
Overall, Resist or Serve is a fine effort from Black Ops. The developer has done its research, and it shows.
