Summary

Dating all the way back to 1995, EA’s NBA Live series is yet another sports franchise the company has had great success with, competing with anything Midway or Sega has to offer. Ten years on and the series is still going strong with the imaginatively titled NBA Live 2004 on GameCube.

It’s true that, year on year, official licenses, statistics and the visuals change and generally improve, whilst gameplay remains largely the same. NBA Live 2004 is no exception, but it reaffirms EA’s status as market leader with basketball games, and here’s why...

Gameplay, as we just mentioned, has changed only a little in the past few years. Passing and shooting the ball is a simply case of pressing buttons on the control pad, but there are a few new tweaks and additions players should know about. An enhanced Freestyle Control option gives players the ability to make signature moves and mid-air adjustments and players can even control any player, anywhere on the court, with Off Ball Play. It simply increases the amount of variables within the game, and makes things far more interesting. On the other hand, you can try your skills with management by building your own team, recruiting free agents and importing players in the game’s new Dynasty Mode.

Good performances will reward virtual basketball players with a variety of hidden extras, and the game also includes a good selection of music tracks from several well-known artists including Outkast and Black Eyed Peas.

NBA Live 2004 is, like every other to go before it, the best in the series so far. And you’ve only a year to wait for NBA Live 2005.
