Summary

As your granddad may have told you on more than one occasion, the summer of 1940 was looking pretty grim for Britain. France had fallen, and we were all alone, seemingly defenceless, as we awaited the onslaught of the Luftwaffe blitzkrieg. The free world as we knew it looked pretty much doomed. But, fortunately, Hitler hadn't reckoned with the might of the RAF, who promptly took to the skies and kicked some evil Nazi butt. As Tony would have said, 'Cool Britannia indeed!' Well, in celebration of such a feat, this latest expansion pack for Combat Flight Simulator 3 gives players the chance to scramble, get airborne and relive the events of that famous battle, all from the comfort of their very own PCs.

More specifically, the game features 20 RAF and 20 Luftwaffe missions that accurately recreate noteworthy events throughout the battle. Set in chronological order, and developed with painstaking accuracy, each mission is taken from a particularly memorable day, featuring details right down to the correct weather and time. There are a number of scenery improvements to the locations used in the missions, as well as a wealth of special effects that go towards capturing the atmosphere of WWII air combat, such as searchlights, bomb flares, smoke effects, and tracer fire. A particularly nice touch is the inclusion of air raid sirens that trigger when you approach a target.

As you would expect, a range of different planes can be piloted - 11 in this case - all are faithfully rendered from their real life counterparts, appear in varying liveries, and benefit from interactive cockpits and impressive animation. As such, throughout the allied missions you can fly such famous craft as the Hawker Hurricane Mk1, and the Supermarine Spitfire Mk1A. Alternatively, the Luftwaffe line-up consists of the likes of the Messerschmitt Me 109E4, the Junkers Ju 87B Stuka, and the Heinkel He 111.

There have been a fair few games based on the Battle of Britain over the years. This one seems to be by far the most detailed, presenting a fairly unique insight into the famous conflict, powered by one of the most competent of flight sims.
