An island in the West Indies, off northern Haiti, Tortuga was a well known pirate refuge in the 17th century. Aptly, it's also the title of this latest swashbuckling RTS from aficionados of strategy, Ascaron, which gives players the opportunity to experience all the fun of living it large as a pirate from the comfort of their own PC.
With a total of 16 different scenarios, the game offers you the choice to take on the role of either a buccaneer in service of his Majesty or as a good old pirate. Subsequently, your riches, and therefore overall triumph, depend on your ability to either successfully perform all the down and dirty deeds of your average Long John Silver-type - such as piracy, ship thieving and town plundering - or, alternatively, effectively complete missions for the town governments.
As with most games of this ilk, you start off with just a short supply of essentials - in this case a basic ship and a small reserve of cash - and, as such, are initially only equipped to take on the smaller battles and do a bit of exploring. You therefore need to gain in strength and, to so this, need to acquire larger, stronger ships that would make conquering cities a possibility. Successful raids on transport, trade and military convoys and on other pirates provide the funds for the much needed faster, more agile ships, as well as for the well-equipped battleships.
The gameworld in Tortuga is vast and highly detailed, spanning 60 towns of the English, Spanish, French and Dutch nations. It's also open-ended, giving you the opportunity to play through the game as you choose and therefore forge your own destiny.
