Summary
Legendary football manager from days of old, and curmudgeonly father figure to the chosen few, Brian Clough once said something about it only taking a second to score a goal. While there is some truth in this, the hard work done by the people who don't hog as much of the spotlight as the star players is just as important as the men out on the pitch. We're talking about the managers, coaches, trainers, scouts, physios and the like: everyone at a football club is part of the team, not just the men who step over the white line.
Football and videogames are irretrievably linked, and the management side of things - rather than trying to be a Libero Grande or an International Superstar - is hugely popular, especially in Europe. The manic football fans at Sports Interactive know this, and they keep coming up with the goods. Eidos Interactive's last hurrah with the soccer-mad developer is Championship Manager Season 03-04, and it exists only to gobble up what spare time you might have.
The game boasts a whole host of new features and improvements, including four new leagues, a pre-game database editor, the ability to view previously saved matches and - of course - updated player, team and competition structure data for the 03/04 season.
Leagues from a staggering 43 countries are playable, accounting for over 100 divisions, a database of more than 200,000 footballers from around the world, and statistics rated by an army of more than 2,500 researchers from all corners of the globe. Sports Interactive have once again called upon ex-Liverpool and Republic of Ireland player and regular TV pundit Ray Houghton to act as the game's consultant to provide the ultimate in accuracy and authenticity.
So when you're under attack from the media, the chairman of the club wants to have a 'chat' with you, and the fans are baying for blood - preferably yours - you only have yourself to blame for the appointment of crummy players, poor training regimes and falling match attendances. On the other hand, apply yourself to the task in hand, consider the options before making decisions about tactics and players etc., and you might survive the shark-infested waters of football management. You might even be successful, and that's the appeal of Championship Manager Season 03-04. After all, you play to win, right?
