Summary

Need for Speed is a racing series we're sure most of you will have heard of. It's from Electronic Arts, and dates back to the 90s in what is one of the longest running racers around. Most of these games were straight sequels, but on one occasion the developer decided to release a new racer dedicated to the Porsche brand. It was imaginatively titled Porsche Unleashed. It was for PC and PlayStation, but we never imagined the 3D racer would make it over to Game Boy...

In what is a remarkably faithful representation, Porsche Unleashed for GBA looks incredible. It's 3D, it runs smoothly and it's textured. We certainly have no complaints in the graphics department. And there isn't much to gripe about regarding gameplay either. It's dead simple - you have a button to accelerate, another to brake and a d-pad for steering. It's the usual 16-bit control method - the only downside is the lack of analogue control, but that's unavoidable.

As a Porsche-em-up racer, this offering of Need for Speed allows players to race a variety of Porsche-branded motors. All are high performance, all are customisable, and all are great fun to race. Actual races are generally evenly matched, meaning victory will be down to your own level of skill. Flukes are few and far between in this game - enjoy the challenge.

Porsche Unleashed is a great racer, and the GBA conversion is equally accomplished. Great stuff.
