Summary
Not, as you may be thinking, some kind of his and hers honeymoon bathroom suite, the Two Thrones in question in this case are those of the English and French monarchies. You see, this game is quite a serious man's RTS, set during a time when noble families in England and France were engaged in an epic war for control of the two thrones of the kingdom.
More specifically, the game takes place in the years between 1337 and 1490, in a time when nobility and the church held no power. This was also at the height of the medieval period, where great achievements and chivalric deeds were all common, as were the treacherous tragedies and villainous actions of its people. In this period, new cities were founded, great castles constructed, universities, convents and cathedrals built. Conversely, terrible wars were fought, the Black Death extinguished near a third of Europe's population, and famine and marauding warriors were scourges to the population.
And on that note, this is where the fun begins, as you choose between several large nations, including England, France and Burgundy, and attempt to survive the treacherous intrigues of medieval politics. The chief objective is to develop your kingdom into an economic, military and political power, whilst at the same time remaining careful not to alienate the likes of the church, nobility, peasants or the merchant class on your way to supremacy.
A wide variety of options are open to you during your quest, offering you different routes to achieving certain objectives. You can recruit noble knights with mighty castles, raise large hosts of spearmen to defend your realms, rely upon English longbowmen, or even pay silver in order to recruit Swiss pikers. Throughout the game, you get to experience an assortment of detailed historical events, which ultimately help to guide your nation through the dark ages of history towards the renaissance. Additionally, the game also supports LAN/Internet-based multiplayer gaming, meaning that you can nobly, honourably and bravely kick your mates' butts. Which is nice.
