Summary
First there was IL-2 Sturmovik, but that wasn't enough. Then there was IL-2 Sturmovik: Forgotten Battles, and that wasn't enough either. However, GMX's Combat Over Europe should ease the demands of Sturmovik fans around the world, at least for a while, in what has turned out to be a massive Forgotten Battle expansion pack for PC.
To set the tone of Combat Over Europe, a ton of video footage has been included, showcasing historical newsreels from WWII, not to mention Battle of Britain and D-Day footage.
Some 15 training areas provide instruction on air-based combat. Single training missions allow you to test your own skills in the German jet, whilst a separate twelve page PDF document provides classroom style instruction in air to air combat for budding aces like yourselves.
Getting into the game proper, Combat Over Europe is host to eight fresh campaigns, complete with online co-operative missions and a speech pack for Russian and German to English translation. Piloting planes such as the tricky Me 262 jet fighter, players already familiar with Forgotten Battles' control method will feel immediately comfortable in the virtual cockpit. But whatever your skill level or interest, Combat Over Europe accommodates.
In addition, the game brings with it four dogfight maps, both summer and winter weather conditions, new skins and squadron markings for your plane and a vast library of documents including the histories of many infamous fighter planes.
It's a welcome addition to the Sturmovik series, and we're sure it won't be the last. Great fun.
