Summary
One of the most enjoyed and respected shooters in the industry, Electronic Arts' Battlefield series has proven immensely popular with FPS purists. Both the original and The Road to Rome delivered high-end gameplay, superior visuals and brilliant multiplayer options. Now, for 2004, the two have come together in an affordable deluxe edition.
Battlefield 1942
With support for up to 64 players, via a LAN or the Internet, Battlefield 1942 presents players with a multiplayer-focused World War II experience. With all the power and tools to affect the outcomes of certain key battles, players are given control of over 35 authentic Axis and Allied vehicles, the choice of five player classes, as well as a great many options in carrying out their plan of action.
As expected, the storming of the beaches of Normandy is one of the scenarios present, along with other missions, such as commanding a tank at Kursk, piloting fighters or shore battery at the battle of Midway, and commanding an aircraft carrier or a jeep at Guadalcanal.
The game also features large and detailed maps that allow players to strategize a variety of battle plans, the fighting taking place in the most famous and pivotal battles of the Second World War, from Europe, Pacific, Eastern Europe and North Africa. Over 16 maps from these four locations are included.
Though the multiplayer aspect is the key focus of Battlefield 1942, a single player game is featured too. Featuring advanced AI and no scripting, the single player missions present the player with an entirely different experience each time.
Battlefield 1942: The Road to Rome
Not wanting to change anything, the expansion pack Road to Rome, developed by Digital Illusions concentrates its efforts on bringing us another fantastic multiplayer romp, giving players more of what they're used to, such as more maps, weapons, vehicles, and fighting forces. And rightly so.
The Road to Rome focuses exclusively on the largely under-publicised Italian and Sicilian campaigns of World War II. Players can choose to fight on six new maps including Operation Husky (Sicily) and the battles for Anzio and Monte Cassino. Each map comes with highly detailed environments such as Italian houses, Mediterranean trees and even the Monte Cassino Monestary.
As with the original game, controllable vehicles are at the heart of the Road to Rome experience. Eight new vehicles feature, in addition to the 30+ from the original title, including the German BF-110 and British Mosquito twin-engine fighter-bombers. Also appearing for the first time is an Italian torpedo boat, as well as British and German tanks and anti-tank guns.
Again it's the massive multiplayer aspect that makes the game and again up to 64 players can take part in the huge battles. So owners of broadband and/or gamers with access to a LAN are strongly advised to play this game. If you've never experienced the joys of trying to shoot your mate with a bazooka from over a mile away as he weaves about in a jeep, then that's something you definitely need to try. Whether you like that sort of thing or not.
