Summary

The first Resident Evil game started an institution in gaming. Firmly establishing the ‘survival horror’ genre, it told the story of a battle of survival against a wave of zombies following the disastrous experiments of the evil ‘Umbrella’ corporation.

The first Resident Evil Outbreak was also known as RE: Online, though at the time when it was released in the UK it shipped without the game’s online elements. Set during the story of Resident Evil 3, it followed the adventures of 8 different citizens of Racoon City during the zombie crisis.

Now Resident Evil Outbreak File #2 follows eight Racoon City people, this time during the crisis in the first Resident Evil game. The eight characters are the same as in the first Outbreak title: Alyssa, Cindy, David, George, Jim, Kevin, Mark and Yoko. With jobs ranging from Police Officer to Plumber, each has different strengths and weaknesses, which will come in handy as you try to solve the various puzzles you come up against. And all the time you must evade the horrific threat of zombie death, not to mention getting out of the city before the government destroys the whole place.

Playing the one player game you control one character assisted by two computer controlled helpers. But Europeans will be able to enjoy the online version too this time around, in which up to four players can co-operate to get them selves out of the fine mess they have found themselves in. Play through the all-new scenarios, choose one of several paths through each one. The replay value is further increased by the fact that the enemies (some of which have never been seen before) will appear in different places each time. You can pick up everyday objects scattered through the levels to throw at them, too. There are two control systems. One uses the d-pad in the time-honoured RE style, another more modern system makes use of the analogue sticks in a similar way to Capcom’s Devil May Cry games. The game is fleshed out further with support for the PS2 HDD and a result point system which allows you to unlock assets from the Resident Evil series. If you though members of the S.T.A.R.S. team were ill-equipped for the zombie onslaught, then just try surviving it as a normal person!
